Questions we get before people commit to a monthly plan

Short answers drawn from our own test bench, not from a legal department. If a detail depends on your line, your decoder or your suburb, we say so.

How long do you actually keep a device before writing it up?

Usually six to eight weeks. That covers a firmware update cycle, at least one load shedding stage change and enough evening peak traffic to see whether a box holds resolution or starts dropping frames. Anything shorter tends to miss the problems that show up in week three.

Do you test on fibre only, or also on mobile data?

Both. Most of our streaming runs sit on a 50 Mbps fibre line, but we also log hourly data use on a prepaid bundle so you can see what a two-hour match or a full season costs you in gigabytes. Numbers vary by resolution and by how often the app re-buffers.

What happens to a review after a firmware update?

We go back and note it. Remote layouts shift, apps disappear from the store, and parental controls sometimes reset to default. When that happens we add a dated note to the original write-up rather than quietly rewriting it, so you can see what changed and when.

Can you tell me how hard it is to cancel a subscription?

Yes, and we do it in every service comparison. We record whether cancellation runs through the app, a web account page or a phone call, how many steps it takes, and whether the service keeps billing until the end of the cycle. That last part catches people out more often than the cancellation itself.

Do you accept devices from readers for testing?

We do, particularly second-hand decoders and soundbars that are hard to find new. Send us the model, where you bought it and what you want checked, and we will confirm whether it fits the current test queue. Shipping and return arrangements are handled over email before anything is sent.

Still unsure about a specific setup? The help desk notes cover common decoder and router fixes, and you can reach the desk directly through contact.

What readers told us after they switched

These notes come from households who used our setup steps, comparison tables and cancellation walkthroughs. We keep them short and specific: what they ran into, what changed, and what still annoys them.

Thandiwe M. - Roodepoort

Fibre line stopped dropping at 8pm

We followed the router settings from the DStv vs Netflix piece and moved the box onto Ethernet. Evening buffering on live sport went from a few stalls per match to almost none. The part about data per hour helped us pick a smaller bundle.

Sipho N. - Benoni

Load shedding routine finally sorted

The power-cut article explained why our decoder needed a manual restart but the ONT came back on its own. We now power devices in the order listed and keep a small UPS for the router only. Two months in, no more guessing after Stage 4.

Marlize v. R. - Bloemfontein

Second-hand decoder rescan worked

Bought a used OpenView box and had no channel list. The rescan walkthrough got us the free-to-air channels back, including the news ones. Signal readings in the article matched what our antenna showed, which saved a technician call-out.

Andre P. - Centurion

Cancellation took one call, not three

The subscription comparison listed which providers let you cancel online and which need a phone call. Knowing that upfront meant we cancelled a service in one attempt instead of getting bounced around. Support response times were noted accurately.

Nadia K. - Durban

Parental controls that actually hold

We set up PIN locks on two platforms using the guide. One held after a firmware update, the other reset itself, which the article had warned about. Good to know before the kids found the gap first.

Johan D. - Pretoria East

Soundbar notes saved a return

The review mentioned a specific HDMI ARC quirk with our TV model. We checked before buying, avoided the mismatch, and skipped a return trip. Remote layout notes were small but genuinely useful day to day.

Reader reviews, sorted by usefulness

Aggregated feedback from households who tested streaming services, smart TV boxes and soundbars on South African fibre lines. Sorted by how many readers found each write-up helpful, not by star rating alone.

Send us a device, or start with the review that fits your setup

If you are still weighing a monthly plan, the first-month write-up covers setup time, data use per hour and how the cancellation process actually went. For a box you already own, our test desk takes loan units for two to three weeks and returns them with the notes.
